Charlie Daniels has enjoyed one of the longest careers in modern music history. The long-haired country boy is famous for his outspoken patriotism and crowd-pleasing performances.
'The first music I ever played seriously was bluegrass, and I developed a deep and abiding love for this pure and honest music,' says Daniels.
Ricky Skaggs, the Whites, Rob and Ronnie McCoury, Mac Wiseman and Earl Scruggs join him on this collection of gospel bluegrass classics.
Nickel Creek's mandolin-genius Chris Thile contributes tasteful instrumental backgrounds for Daniels' spoken recitations of Psalms 23 and 91. Charlie's fiddle sizzles on 'I'll Fly Away.' His rough-edged voice with its energetic swamp rock groove is just right singing 'I'm Working on a Building.'
'Keep on the Sunny Side' and 'What Would You Give (In Exchange for Your Soul)' sound like old-time pickers gathered to play in a living room. Daniels and friends' obvious enjoyment of their time together is contagious.
'Not every musician understands bluegrass,' he notes. 'It's a fragile acoustical sound with unusual phrasing and intangible dynamics that can elude the ear of the finest musicians. Either you 'get it' or you don't, and while I certainly don't consider myself any kind of virtuoso, I'm thankful that at least I 'get it.''"
I'll be writing a more biased review soon. This is a great album if you love bluegrass or Charlie. - Matt
